Myth
I loved this section of the class. I truly enjoyed reading about the different myths. I also liked the presentations that helped create an overview of everything. I focused more on the Trickster Myth. Browsing over all the different myths in the book, I was most impressed and interested in the Trickster Myth. Some of these myths had strong sexual content or crude humor. This to me was a bit of a shock. I remember my group was trying to decide what myth to present on and we were trying to pick the cleanest one! Our final pick was my favorite myth overall, “Why We Tell Stories about Spider.” This was a great story that showed the concept of being a Trickster. Annanu, the spider, tricks three characters. He doesn’t use force, but rather his cleverness. He finds a way to trick each one by using their weakness against them. Having enjoyed the Trickster Myth this much, made me want to write one of my own. It wasn’t hard to pick the characters in my story because I started with my favorite animal, the polar bear. Having this idea made me pick the animals that lived in close proximity with the polar bear in the wild. The hard part was coming up with a story that flowed, and had the characteristics of a Trickster Myth. I think this is a great way to gain even further understanding on the myth. Since your writing about it, you want to emulate the myths that you read about. From there, you can become creative and change things up a bit. I definitely want to do this with my future students. Not only will they gain a world view of different myths, but also have the opportunity to become creative and imitate the stories. This assignment has many elements to it. First one must read myth, present about myth, write your own myth, and publish a website. Through these steps, one increases their understanding and appreciation of the readings.

Hi Evelyn,
ReplyDeleteI’m glad I’m not the only one who enjoyed this unit! I have always loved reading about myths on my own, but I almost think it’s more fun when you’re in school and you can have discussions about the aspects of the story. I too liked the Trickster section, but I didn’t get a chance to look through all of the myths. I find it funny that you were taken aback by the myth content. When you think about it, ancient cultures were much more used to talking about sex and other “icky” subjects, and hence it features prominently in their stories (Zeus being horny and raping a ton of mortal women, for instance). I think our culture has become more puritanical in its values, and yet you wouldn’t really think so with all of the sex and violence on TV and in the movies. But I digress…
I’ve always thought trickster myths were great because there is always some kind of “gotcha!” moment at the end when someone is duped or taken advantage of. I was wary of trying to do a trickster myth for this assignment because I didn’t think I could come up with a clever twist. But I wish you luck on your polar bear myth, I’m sure you’ll do great!
I see exactly why doing this assignment was fun for us all-- well the actual study of myths. I agree that a majority of trickster myths are sexually explicit and "crude" as you put it. But when I read the spider myth, I thought it was so cute...
ReplyDeleteHow are you doing on your myth about the polar bear? Is it complete, or is it a little more difficult to create? I found my myth at a stump in the road. I don't know what to do with it now and have a feeling I'll need to do so major revising before I feel confident enough to present it (even though a rough draft is on my website)...
But at least we both chose a type of myth that is fun and perhaps upbeat.
I agree with you that the steps of this assignment were very influental to our development and I enjoyed this assignment.
I thought every presentation was really neat and can't wait to read what everyone creates.
Good Luck !!!
Hey Evelyn! I remember the hard time we had looking for a "decent" trickster myth! Hahha that was WAY too funny. We all kind of stared at each thinking: hmmm.. maybe not? But you guys found a good one! I think when we teach we have to be really careful when it comes to talking about trickster myths in the classroom. We'd probably get a lot of parental complaints. I also really like your idea about the polar bear! I've never read a myth about polar bears. They're such rare animals that it should be interesting to see what you create for your myth. I can't wait to check it out.
